Toward the unknown region

I would like to share with you my dearest musical affection for a piece that strikes me as answering the question as to whether RVW had a Christian faith. Here is his setting of Walt Whitman’s poem “Toward the unknown region”

Toward the unknown region

Darest thou now O soul,
Walk out with me toward the unknown region,
Where neither ground is for the feet nor any path to follow?

No map there, nor guide,
Nor voice sounding, nor touch of human hand,
Nor face with blooming flesh, nor lips, nor eyes, are in that land.

I know it not O soul,
Nor dost thou, all is a blank before us,
All waits undream’d of in that region, that inaccessible land.

Till when the ties loosen,
All but the ties eternal, Time and Space,
Nor darkness, gravitation, sense, nor any bounds bounding us.

Then we burst forth, we float,
In Time and Space O soul, prepared for them,
Equal, equipt at last, (O joy! O fruit of all!) them to fulfil O soul.

Listen to the music that he writes to accompany it, then you decide. (Bear in mind though that he lived through two world wars after this!)

  1. Hey would you mind letting me know which web host you’re working with?
I’ve loaded your blog in 3 different browsers and I must say this blog loads
a lot faster then most. Can you recommend a good hosting provider at a reasonable
    price? Kudos, I appreciate it!

  2. I just use the WordPress site so it is there own hosting. It is pretty quick.
